File Backup FAQ's

Our file backups aim to be easy and safe once they are configured but some options may need some extra explanations.

Can I set a backup schedule?

  • No, for our file backups, we don't run backups on a set schedule but rather we user a periodic system to run backups.
  • We believe this is more effective than a backup schedule since it will allow systems that miss backups for prolonged periods of time, to immediately start a backup when they are reconnected to our system. Additionally, with a backup schedule, backups can be missed if a system cannot connect to our cloud during the backup start time.

Will you manage my File backups?

  • Unfortunately, we no longer manage file backups. With DR backups we're able to select entire volumes to make sure that everything you need is backed up and we're able to test and verify that the data on that image is intact using chkdsk. When creating a file backup job, it's much harder for us to ensure that everything which needs to be protected, is a part of the backup source, because we'll never be as familiar with your client's setup as you are. We've decided it's in everyone's best interest to focus on making DR backups easier and safer.

Can I backup an entire volume with Servosity File Backup?

  • While you can select an entire volume as a backup source, the likelihood of that backup working well is low. Things like system files, page files, and other data on the drive are likely to cause issues.
  • If you do run into errors, then it becomes a game of whack-a-mole excluding files and folders to try and eliminate those errors. It's better to just select the files and folders you do want to backup, and then if there are errors, we're happy to help you figure out what's going wrong so that all of the files you need are backed up.
  • Because of these reasons, we don't support selecting full volumes for file backups. If you need a full volume backed up, we recommend using our DR Backup accounts instead!

Is there a limit to the amount of files I can backup?

  • We do have some "limits" when it comes to the amount of files that we support backing up
  • We have a soft limit of 1 million files. We can totally backup 1 million+ files but, when performing a restore, our portal interface does not support browsing or searching through more than a million files. If you do end up with more than 1 million files in a single snapshot, we can still restore those files but, you will have to restore the entire snapshot.
  • In CC, backups with 1 million or more files will cause a warning report. Backups with 1.2 million or more files will cause a failure report.

Why can't I select this volume to backup?

  • One limitation of our file backups is that we can only backup internally stored files. This means that any mapped any Network Drives, External Drives, etc. cannot be backed up.
  • If you do need a backup solution for those files, we do offer a NAS backup type however, those backups do not have unlimited storage (you can refer to your pricing sheet or reach out to us at Support@Servosity.com to find the pricing for those)
