How are my backups tested?

While we offer automatic testing, you might not have an understanding of how and what we actually do to test your backups.

*Note* This only applies to DR Server or DR Desktop backups

For our DR backups, the testing we offer are as follows:

  • Daily Chkdsk (Automatic) - Every night we automatically mount the Consolidated Daily image that is uploaded to the cloud and run Microsoft chkdsk on that volume to verify that the file system is intact. We do this for all volumes to ensure that when data is restored we will be able to mount the file system successfully.
  • Weekly Data Integrity Check (Automatic): Each week we automatically check the md5 hash of each backup image and compare it to the initial md5 hash when that image was created to verify that nothing in it has changed. If any of the md5 hashes do not match the file created when the image was first made, we know there may be corruption with that image file.
  • Monthly VirtualBoot Verification (Automatic): Each month (for sites that have a dedicated BDR server) we will automatically spin up a copy of the system volume for each system we're backing up, and take a screenshot of it. This is to verify that the hypervisor is working correctly and the images are bootable in the event of a disaster.
  • Quarterly DRaaS testing (on-request only):  You can request a DRaaS test for any Company with DR Accounts, we provide 4 hours of free time to run your servers in the cloud per quarter. If you're interesting in setting up this test, please reach out to Support@Servosity.com so we can get the test scheduled.
