How do I run a Self-Healing Incremental?

Arcserve SPX has a built in feature to repair a broken Image chain. This self-healing incremental should only be used if an issue is found on an existing chain. This does not solve underlying chkdsk issues.

For Servosity Simplified customers, our team will perform these steps for you. This article just serves as a guide/info page for what a Self-Healing Incremental entails.

Use Cases:

  • Fix a broken image chain
    • If a fairly recent image shows signs of corruption and causes issues with the backups, removing it and any images that depend on can allow for the continuation of the chain
  • Fix Chkdsk errors that exist only on the image chain
    • If an offline chkdsk on the source system shows no corruption but the images are still failing chkdsk, a self-healing incremental can repair the chain so that it more accurately mirrors the health of the source volume

Steps for Running a Self-Healing Incremental:

  1. Locate and make note of the problem images
    1. If the full is corrupted, you will have to rebase the chain
  2. Remove all problem images from the backup destination
  3. Start an incremental job in SPX
    1. This backup will most likely fail, run a 2nd job after the failure
  4. Verify that the new image is reporting clean
    1. If you are still having issues, there are probably more problem images in the chain or the source volume has issues.
