While it's possible to migrate a system to new hardware using a DR Desktop/Server backup chain, there is better software which has been designed for that purpose. DR Image backups are intended to recover a failed system, not to migrate a working one. Here are some factors to consider:
Limited Support:
Although migrations are not a recommended use case for Servosity DR backups, our support team is still available to assist, in a limited capacity. We will not assist with a migration, however if you do attempt one and encounter issues, we will be glad to troubleshoot and resolve those issues with you. Just contact our support team via phone or email during our normal business hours (9am - 6pm EST, Monday - Friday). Emergency support is not available for issues with migrations.
Recommended Settings:
If you are simply restoring a data volume to a new system, this can be handled by using the ShadowProtect client software on that system and performing a restore to the new data volume.
Any restore of a system volume should be handled via the ShadowProtect Recovery Environment. Be sure that in the restore wizard you select the option for "Hardware Independent Restore"
Recovery Environment Training:
During your initial onboarding, you have the option of going through our Servosity restore training, but we understand that explaining how to do something doesn't really prepare you to actually do it. With that in mind, Servosity offers a full ShadowProtect Recovery Environment training to all partners. This can be done in a test lab to get you some hands on experience, or if you do have a migration planned, we are willing to use that opportunity to educate your team on how to do a restore from the recovery environment. Please contact support@servosity.com if you need to schedule a training.
